What's a Mystery Item!?

When we write “mystery item” on the share box ingredient list we don't mean that you'll be mystified by what it is, only that Stephen or I are playing it safe because we're not sure if we'll have enough of a certain item for everyone, and we want to keep our options open about the substitutions we'll make. We figure that it's better to surprise people than disappoint them. We make these harvest lists for the news letter several days before the harvest, and we both like to leave ourselves some wiggle room. Sometimes crops we've been counting on get destroyed by hail, or sometimes a heat wave can push a crop past its prime before we have a chance to pick it. Sometimes deer or gophers harvest more than their “share” and our harvest comes up short. Sometimes we just make a mistake in our estimation. But don't worry. For both Stephen and I, this is the eleventh year of harvesting CSA shares, and we've gotten pretty good at eyeballing the fields. -Andy
